How to Plan a Helicopter Wedding in the Canadian Rockies

How to Plan a Helicopter Wedding in the Canadian Rockies

A heli-wedding in the Canadian Rockies is an extraordinary way to celebrate your love, combining breathtaking aerial views, remote ceremony locations, and an unforgettable adventure. Whether you envision exchanging vows on an alpine ridge, beside a stunning mountain backdrop, or atop a secluded peak, this experience provides an intimate and awe-inspiring experience.

Planning this type of wedding requires careful consideration, from selecting the right location and flight provider to ensuring you have an experienced elopement photographer (like myself) who can document the journey seamlessly. As a professional adventure wedding photographer, I specialize in capturing these high-altitude, once-in-a-lifetime moments with artistry and precision. My knowledge of the region, lighting conditions, and the best vantage points ensures that every moment is preserved beautifully.

I’m fortunate to have photographed hundreds of helicopter weddings and I’ve created a page dedicated to to this experience which you can click below to learn more:

Why Choose a Helicopter Wedding?

Exclusive & Breathtaking Locations

One of the main reasons couples opt for a heli wedding is the ability to reach secluded, breathtaking locations that are otherwise inaccessible. However, it’s important to note that we cannot land just anywhere in Banff National Park or other protected areas. There are designated landing sites that require permits and must be arranged through an experienced provider.

If you would like to learn more about eloping in Banff National Park I wrote an article that is worth reading:

An Unparalleled Experience

A mountaintop wedding isn’t just any ceremony—it’s a wild adventure you’ll remember forever. Picture this: you take off from the valley, soaring high above those majestic peaks, and then you land in a secluded spot that feels like it’s all yours, just surrounded by nature’s breathtaking beauty. For couples looking for something truly special, I’m here to offer an ultra-luxurious adventure wedding that’s totally one-of-a-kind. If you’re after that extraordinary wedding experience, this is it.

As someone who’s been in the elopement photography game for 20 years, I guide couples on timing, lighting, and the best spots to capture those magical moments, making sure you get images that look like they belong in a magazine. Best Helicopter Wedding Locations in the Canadian Rockies

So, if you’re thinking about a helicopter wedding, you gotta know there are some rules about where you can land. But don’t worry—teaming up with the right provider means you can get to some of the most stunning spots around. Check these out:

Kananaskis Country – This place is all about remote beauty and fewer crowds, making it perfect for a special day.

Abraham Lake & David Thompson Country – Picture turquoise waters surrounded by majestic peaks. Just keep in mind that landing’s only allowed in certain spots here.

Icefields Parkway – If you’re up for it, this route offers jaw-dropping aerial views of glaciers, waterfalls, and untouched nature.

And hey, if you’re curious about more hidden gems along the Icefields Parkway, definitely take a look at the Elopement Guide that I wrote for this area:

Step-by-Step: Planning Your Heli-Wedding

1. Choose a Safe & Licensed Heli-Operator

First things first, you gotta pick a licensed heli-operator who knows what they’re doing. Not every spot is a location you can land on, so it’s super important to team up with someone experienced who gets the local rules and permits. A good company will help you figure out where you can land and make sure everything’s on the up-and-up with Parks of Canada.

Check out Alpine Helicopter in Canmore! It’s got one of the best spots for heli weddings since it’s closer to Banff and way more convenient than some other places. Plus, they’ll take you to some breathtaking backcountry locations without the hustle and bustle of Banff town. The other operator is located just off the Icefield Parkway called Rockies Heli Canada who are also fabulous and great to work with.

2. Secure the Right Vendors for Your Wedding

Planning a heli wedding is no small feat; it takes some serious coordination with vendors who really get the unique challenges of pulling off an event in such a remote, high-altitude spot. So, here’s a rundown of what you’ll need, and I’ve got connections to all of these folks to help make your dream day a reality:

  • First up, you’ll want an Elopement Photographer—someone like me who knows the ins and outs of aerial and high-altitude shots. Trust me, you want someone who can capture those breathtaking views.
  • Next, don’t forget about a Marriage Commissioner or Officiant. Make sure they’re comfortable with remote weddings; it can be a bit tricky if they’re not used to it.
  • You’ll also need a Florist who can whip up bouquets and boutonnieres that can handle whatever Mother Nature throws your way. Those mountain winds can be something else!
  • And let’s talk Hair & Makeup Artists. It’s essential to find someone skilled in long-wear styles since the altitude and wind can play havoc with your look.
  • Oh, and don’t overlook Permits and Legal Paperwork! You’ll need to snag an Alberta Marriage License and check on any necessary landing permits for your helicopter.
  • If your wedding involves some hiking or exploring, consider hiring Adventure Guides to make sure everyone stays safe and on track.

If you’d like more details on what vendor do you need, I wrote an article covering this topic that you can click below:

Finding Your Dream Ceremony Location

The Canadian Rockies are packed with jaw-dropping wedding venues, but here’s the thing: not all of ’em are easy to get to. If you’re up for an adventure, some scenic flights can take you over those iconic glacial lakes and stunning mountain ranges, though landing options are pretty limited to certain backcountry spots.

Think about the kind of scenery that speaks to you:

  • Dramatic Alpine Peaks – Imagine saying your vows with towering, snow-capped mountains as your backdrop. Pretty epic, right?
  • Scenic Aerial Views – Picture this: you soar above turquoise lakes, glaciers, and waterfalls before touching down in a truly breathtaking mountain setting.
  • High-altitude Meadows – If you’re after something more intimate, these wildflower-filled landscapes with rolling ridgelines could be just what you need for a nature-infused ceremony.

The Ultimate Adventure Experience

If you and your partner are on the hunt for an adventure that really stands out, I’ve got something special for you. Imagine a journey that takes you to some of the most breathtaking spots, from towering alpine peaks to hidden backcountry treasures. Each stop along the way offers its own vibe and scenery, making it perfect for couples who want an unforgettable elopement experience. This isn’t just any wedding; it’s tailored for those looking to elevate their special day to new heights.

Helicopter Wedding Destinations Around the World

Sure, Banff is stunning, but there are so many incredible places around the world where you can tie the knot in style.

  • New Zealand (Milford Sound & Queenstown) – Picture dramatic fjords, snow-capped mountains, and those remote landscapes that leave you breathless.
  • Iceland (Highlands & Glaciers) – Think vast lava fields, black sand beaches, and mesmerizing icy blue glaciers.
  • Hawaii (Kauai & Maui Cliffs) – How about saying “I do” above gorgeous waterfalls, lush valleys, and volcanic craters? Sounds dreamy, right?
  • The Dolomites, Italy – You’ve got towering limestone peaks and cozy mountaintop lodges surrounded by alpine meadows.
  • Yosemite, California – Fly over Half Dome and elope with jaw-dropping views of Yosemite Valley. It’s like a scene straight out of a postcard!
  • Patagonia, Chile – A true hidden gem with glaciers, granite towers, and untouched wilderness that feels worlds away from everything else.

Why Candid and Posed Wedding Photography Both Matter After photographing weddings across Alberta and the Canadian Rockies since 2005, I’ve learned that the most powerful galleries are not purely candid or purely posed. They are a thoughtful balance of both. Candid wedding photography captures spontaneous emotion. Naturally posed photography provides structure, elegance, and refinement. When […]
